Nasi lemak is the signature dish of Malaysia. Like many traditional recipes that are still evergreen, it is made of few simple ingredients that are well matched together. We have white rice that has been steamed with coconut milk and pandan leaves. We have tamarind. And we have a sweet and savoury sambal called ikan bilis, the secret of a good nasi lemak. Everyone has its own sambal recipe. During my stay in Kuala Lumpur I have tasted nasi lemak at 3 different restaurants, everyone claiming to have the best one in town. You can find my review here.
And I have a own recipe for sambal ikan bilis too.
Nasi lemak is usually eaten with a egg, chicken or fish and garnished with roasted peanuts and cucumber slices. It is a morning dish but there is no time limit for enjoying it during the day! In fact, I love eating it after a hard training session so that I can have it with egg AND curry chicken
